How to Use a First Aid Kit

Most people own a kit, but few know how to use the tools inside it. This section teaches simple, real-world skills.

🔍 What’s Inside (and Why)

  • Gloves: protect you + them
  • Gauze & Pads: stop bleeding
  • Wraps/Bandages: secure and support
  • Antiseptic Wipes: clean wounds
  • Cold Pack: swelling and sprains
  • Non-stick Dressings: burns and scrapes
  • Triangle Bandage: sling or immobilization tool

How to Match Tools to Injuries

Injury

                          Use These

Cut/Scrape

                    Gloves → clean → gauze → wrap

Severe bleeding

Pressure → gauze pad → wrap → tourniquet if needed

Burn

Cool water → non-stick dressing → wrap lightly

Sprain

Cold pack → compression wrap → elevate

Nosebleed

Sit forward → pinch nose 10 minutes → cold pack

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t reuse dressings
  • Don’t apply ice directly to skin
  • Don’t tighten wraps so much they cut circulation

When to Get Medical Help

  • Deep wounds
  • Bleeding that won’t slow
  • Burns larger than a palm
  • Signs of infection (redness, pus, fever)
